You need to be seen….

June 23rd, 2011 by TOLTAC

One fundamental premise of surviving is to avoid “survival” situations in the first place.  If you do end up in one of these situations, then they next best thing is to get rescued as soon as possible.  While you may have all of the fancy survival gizmos out there, it is far better if you never have to break open that survival kit.  In order to do this, you need to be seen and heard.  So as you plan your next adventure, whether across town or around the world, ask your self what you have to allow yourself to be seen and heard. Today, almost everyone has a cell phone.  It usually will fit the bill for most low risk adventures.  However, I wouldn’t bet my life on it for anything more than driving across town.  Batteries die, phones get wet, or you just may be out of reach of a cellular tower. So think about alternative ways to call attention to yourself.  I have several different devices and I carry at least some of them all the time Read More...

Basic Safety Tips for Women from Off the Grid News

June 6th, 2011 by TOLTAC

Taken from “Off the Grid News” by Mike As a husband and father, obviously it has been of great importance to me to keep my wife and children safe – even above my own personal safety. I know the husbands and fathers reading this now can definitely relate. You know without question that you would lay your own life down for those you love the most in this world Read More...

Night Vision Equipment by ATN: See Like a Cat at Night

June 6th, 2011 by TOLTAC

Night vision is really some amazing technology.  I will never forget being a young Second Lieutenant and putting on a pair of night vision goggles for the first time.  I was speechless.  That was over twenty five years ago, and they have only become more impressive, and fortunately, they have become more affordable Read More...

Emergency Drinking Water Disinfection Procedures

June 5th, 2011 by TOLTAC

· Boiling. Vigorous boiling for one minute will kill any disease-causing microorganisms present in water. The flat taste of boiled water can be improved by pouring it back and forth from one container to another (to provide aeration), by allowing it to stand for a few hours, or by adding a small pinch of salt for each quart of water boiled Read More...

Another Apocalypse

May 24th, 2011 by TOLTAC

May 21st has come and gone and we are all still here.  Although civilization hasn’t come to a screeching halt, we do have our share of problems to deal with.  There were terrible tornados in the mid west and there is still massive flooding in the south.  How prepared are we as a country to deal with these disasters?  I believe that that question is flawed Read More...

Thursdays update

May 24th, 2011 by TOLTAC

I know it's been a while, but work and family are keeping me busy.  Has anybody noticed the floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters that have been on TV?  Pretty scary stuff.  What is even more frightening is all the politicians talking about our debt ceiling.  Silver and gold prices have recently tanked- in just doesn't make sense, unless the market is being manipulated Read More...

Operational Security 101

April 6th, 2011 by TOLTAC

When I was in the military, operational security was obviously something very important.  Now that I am retired, I just had something happen to me that reminded me operational security (OPSEC) is just as important.  My office manager called me yesterday to tell me that the bank had deactivated my credit card Read More...

Accidents

April 5th, 2011 by TOLTAC

Accidents happen.  Most people accept that statement as fact.  I disagree.  Sure, if you’re walking down the street and get hit by a meteorite, there probably wasn’t much you could do, but that is the exception.  I would argue that most accidents can be prevented. In order to figure out how to prevent accidents, we have to think how they occur Read More...

Generator Safety

April 4th, 2011 by TOLTAC

You know better than to stick your finger in an electrical socket or to stick your hand under a running lawnmower.  In reality, a portable generator requires the same common sense as using a lawnmower or the electricity in your home. "Never Use a Generator Indoors!" Gas generators emit carbon monoxide gas -- the same stuff that kills people who leave their cars running in the garage Read More...

Generators

April 4th, 2011 by TOLTAC

A backup generator is one piece of equipment that I can almost guarantee that you will use.  If you invest in a whole house automatic system, it will also add value to your home.  These systems have come down in price drastically.  Starting at around $2,500.00, you can have the piece of mind knowing that you’ll still have heat in the winter when the lights go out or that your sump pump will continue to operate during the spring rains Read More...
